Look What Is On My Table – Karen McGovern

Karen McGovern has been on the Nunn Design Innovation Team for the past 2 years. We are lucky enough to have her joining us for yet a third year! What I love about Karen is her continual commitment to creativity. She is always willing to explore and experiment with new techniques and products. Let’s take a look this month at what is on her table.

For a while now I’ve been looking at the Nunn Design button bezel shanks…just waiting for the perfect design to pop into my head. As it often happens, one inspiration led to another, then another! First, I had just received some beautiful enamel copper discs from Artisan Beads Plus. As I was going through them I happened to place one right next to one of Becky’s button shanks. Hmmmm, that disc just might fit in the setting….and it did! A perfect fit, in fact. The color green is really speaking to me lately, and the disc is enameled in a gorgeous lime green. The bracelet just sort of grew from there, using the button as the closure, caught in a loop of leather. I used a variety of stone beads in coral and turquoise, accented with Nunn beads and more.

I liked the button “toggle” idea so much I decided to create a necklace too. For this, I cut a disc to fit the button setting from an old tin cookie container. Love the shades of green and yellow! I dapped the disc, then glued it in the shank using two-part epoxy. The silver loop is a large ornate toggle hoop from Nunn that I shaped into an oval so the button could fit through. I picked up the green in the tin with a hunk of chrysoprase accented with Nunn bead caps, and created another accent by riveting a stack of two enamel discs sandwiching a disc I cut from the cookie tin inside a Nunn round bezel pendant setting. Love all those greens! Finished with two styles of Nunn chain, double on one side, single on the other.

Finally, still on a roll with the cookie tin material, I made coordinating earrings using Nunn round earring bezels set with cookie tin discs (glued in place with two-part epoxy.)
