Braving a Pandemic as a Small Business Owner

Nunn Design’s home in Port Townsend is 56 miles outside of Seattle, Washington, the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States.

For the past couple of weeks I have watched, listened and researched as this crisis has unfolded. I wish I could say to my family and friends, “Everything will be fine.”

Being an entrepreneur, artist and small business owner for most of my life, I have experienced many ups and downs from events both within my control and without. The one thing that has been consistent – is change. Navigating change has given me the confidence and conviction to say to my teenage daughters and to you, whatever uncertainty comes our way, we will navigate it together.

For the last several weeks I have been journaling and searching within for guidance in this time of uncertainty. Here is a list of five insights I will be following to move forward as a small business owner during the coming weeks and months.

Make decisions from a place of clarity, not a place of fear.

It is my job as the primary income earner for my business and family to know where I stand financially. At Nunn Design we put out a “State of our Union” email every day that informs everyone as to where we are with sales, receivables, payables and cash flow. We as a team, make decisions on what we do or don’t do based on clarity. We strive to be proactive, not reactive.

Focus on what we can do, not what we cannot.

We cannot control how this virus will impact our business. We can focus on what we can do to minimize the impact.

Hunker down and get to work!

After 9/11, I refused to watch the news. I chose to focus all my energy into being productive. I started to clean and organize my office, receipts, inventory. ANYTHING to keep me moving forward. During this event I will be doing the same.

Keep exploring, making, living!

Time has shown me again and again, that this too shall pass. It is my job as a small business owner to continue to explore the possibilities. To continue making and learning. To continue to live a life of creativity because that is what helps me feel calm, fulfilled and at peace.

Every day I feel grateful to be able to support my family doing work that is fulfilling and in support of my life’s purpose and mission.

Whatever uncertainty comes our way, we will navigate it together
