Artisan Spotlight: Laurie Mika

I have been following Laurie’s work for several years now, always drooling over her lovelies.  Recently, at BeadFest Philadelphia, I had a chance to connect with Laurie.  Not only is her work lovely, but she herself is lovely.  This is to be expected – a person who can do this type of work, has to be cool to the core!

Laurie Mika, artist, author and instructor has been teaching her original and easily recognizable style of mixed media mosaics for years at national and international art retreats like ArtFest, Art Unraveled, Art and Soul, Art is You and CREATE.  Laurie participates in juried shows and exhibitions, and also has her work in galleries and private collections. Her work has received many awards and has been published in numerous magazines and books.

In Laurie’s work, the gilded devotional panels of the past become secular icons imbued with personal narratives. The highly embellished surfaces, including segments of text, form sumptuous tapestries of traditional and modern materials. Jewelry pieces including wearable reliquaries and embedded heart pendants are also part of the magic Laurie finds in combining disparate elements in her work.
